Informational Seminar: How to Get Into Undergraduate Research

The event hosted 6 talks from successful undergraduate researchers in fields from synthetic biology to pharmaceuticals to student-running labs and more! Topics included: how to get research positions, the undergrad research experience, and tips & tricks to help undergrads become better researchers and land their first position. Our undergraduate research guest speakers included Alexander Bogatch, Nika Pavlova, Aghia Mokhber, Ally Cheng, and Linkin Ye.

Research Lab Tours: Summer Research Field Trip Series

This series covered two events suitable for animal and/or plant lovers, with a behind the scenes look into the bird collections & molecular biology laboratories in the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), as well as, a guided tour of the research labs and greenhouses at the UofT Growth Facilities. Our collaborators are Mark Peck and Kristen Choffe from ROM, and Tom Gludovacz and Alice DesRoches from the UofT Growth Facilities.

Informational Seminar: Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

An evening of career and research talks from experts in various fields, covering machine learning and artificial intelligence in medical applications, the development of these techniques, and Vector Institute’s applied research program. Collaborators included: UofT AI Club, and Vector Institute, with guest speakers: Kaden McKeen, Dr. Chris Mcintosh, Dr. Anne Martel, and Taylor Walker.

Community Science Outreach: Interactive Biological Experiments!

Exhibit at the Science Rendezvous festival with the goal to make cell biology lab work accessible and fun for the general public of all ages to enjoy and learn about. Included interactive biology experiments suitable for participants of all pages as well as with accompanying educational mini-presentations about the science and purpose behind each experimental component.

Informational Seminar: Research Opportunities

A continuation of our September seminar, this was a deeper dive into all the research opportunities at UofT presented by Dr. Jeffrey Lee, the Undergraduate Coordinator for the Specialist Program in Pathobiology. An information package with all opportunities discussed, CV and emailing templates, as well as a compiled list of tips was provided to all attendees. Our collaborators include UofT HOSA (Future Health Professionals) and Dr. Jeffrey Lee.

Academic Research Seminar: Stem Cells at Work!

An evening of groundbreaking research and captivating talks about the present and future of regenerative medicine, with active research findings presented by leading scientists in the field. Guest speakers include Dr. Ian Rogers, Dr. Alison Mcguigan, Dr. Ren-Ke Li, and Dr. Michael Laflamme.

Coffee Chat: What We Wish We Knew in Undergrad: Clinical Research vs Wet Lab

Small, casual chat with graduate student(s), early career researcher, or leading expert regarding a topic of interest, with a focus on personal experiences, key takeaways, advice giving, and discussing challenges and ways to solve them. Collaborated with Rehabilitation Science Graduate Students Union, with Ashvene Sureshkumar and Cindy Nguyen as our graduate guest speakers.

Career Seminar: Demystifying Research

An evening of career talks from experts in various fields, covering immunology, pharmtox, molecular biology, and medicine! Topics also included understanding: what do professors want in undergrad researchers, what are the careers like in science & academia, and how research is integrated with medicine. Guest speakers include Dr. Arthur Mortha, Dr. Vincent Tropepe, Dr. Landon Edgar, and Dr. Blair Bigham.

Research Conference: Undergraduate Research Fair

An undergraduate research conference born out of a collaboration with “A Moment of Science, Please!” (UofT club) designed to celebrate the amazing undergrad research and researchers being done here at UofT! Fields covered included everything from pathobiology to psychology, to chemistry, to astronomy and included research supported by OISE, CIHR, NSERC, and more! Dr. Jennifer Mitchell provided an engaging opening speech, followed by seven oral talks and eleven poster presentations. Our guest speakers include Dr. Jennifer Mitchell, and several undergraduate speakers: Daphne Jiang, Daniella Morrone, Nataliia Ivanova, Mu Yan Ren, Gleb Poliakov, Aryan Regmi, Ahmed Moselhi, Kanah Smith, Barbara Gundi, Margaret Anderson, Rohina Kumar, Judith Joshi, Aisling Brody, Catherine Chi, Yihang Zhao, Rico Dong, and Maria Acosta.
